    Hi Maria,

Good news! I have been hypothryoid for 20 years. I just lost 35 lbs. I still have more to go. After you get your meds. regulated, it will be a lot easier for you to lose weight.  I have a friend who had her thryoid removed because of a cancer and she is fine and lost 40lbs. last year.  She did it by following the L.A diet plan- I did it the good old fashioned way, by walking and watching portions. There isn't a magic pill or fad diet that will help. I'm here if you need me. Jen

Hi, Glad to help. If your meds. are regulated properly, you should be able to eat salads without gaining weight. How much and what kind of  salad dressing you are using? I follow a 1200 calorie per day diet. It is balanced and works for me. I also found that I was back-sliding and gaining a pound or two along the way, (we have to be especially viligent, because of a wacky thryoid), and joined T.O.P.S. .That is Take of Pounds Sensibily. Simiular to Weight watchers but much cheaper.  I need to be accountable to someone. They have weekly meetings and are a friendly group of women. You can find a location near you by going online. TOPS. org   or tops. com  When I was eating very little, mostly salads, I found out that I wasn't eating enough to get my metabolism working.... something you might think about. If you need a 1200 calorie diet, ask your doctor or go online and search for one, you don't have to pay for them so don't fall into one of the advertising traps along the way. I hope this helps. I went to a meeting last night and gained another 1/2 pound..... I guess I'd better get walking again. They also said that maybe the melons, that are fresh here and very tasty, are causing me to retain fluid. So It's back to a banana with my breakfast instead of the melon. Good Luck, and I hope I've helped.  Jen.

Hi again, I just thought of about.com  which is a web site that you can access which will help you. Just go to www.about.com and click on health in the left hand corner and it will take you to another site that you will find hypothryoidism or a search  site where you can type in hypothryoidism. Good Luck. Jen.

Hi, Has your dr. stabalized your meds. yet? If he has you can eat a regular diet, low calorie of corse. I lean more to the protein side rather than eating a lot of breads and carbos. Hope this helps. Jen

    Hi Maria,

My name is Carmen and I too was diagnosed with hypotyroid and was told I needed to take medication for the rest of my life. I told the doctor to give me a chance to try some natural remedies before doing anything else. I did and my t4 levels went down and was told that I wouldn't need to go on medication.

If you would like to know what I used....you may give me a call at . I'd be glad to share with you.

    Take care,

hi, Just stay on the meds.(for the rest of your life,) the dosage may  have to be changed from time to time. You will feel good soon. Stay on your diet and walk when you can, gradually speed up or increase your walk and be patient. You'll do fine.  Jen

Hi, I also have hypothyroidism. My family dr. put me on meds. It really messed me up. I moved on to an ear, nose, throat specialist. He did an ultrasound, found and removed a  benign tumor. This evened out my symptoms so the meds could work. Ask your dr. to do an ultrasound because a tumor can cause big fluctuations in your hormones. You may need a specialist..

Natural remedies aren't really a good idea because your thyroid is really sensitive and your dosage has to be tweeked alot.  This is hard to do with natural remedies especially if your dr. isn't with the program. If you decide to go ahead with the natural remedies, do alot of research. some of them mimic ephidrine and although you will lose weight you will DESTROY your heart.
